“If we take people only as they are, we make them worse; if we treat them as if they were what they ought to be, we bring them to where they can be brought.”

Words by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) — German poet, novelist, and statesman.

About this quote

This quotation highlights the power of high expectations in human development. Treating people based solely on their current flaws reinforces those limitations. However, when we treat others as if they already possess the capability and character they are capable of achieving, we encourage them to grow. It remains a foundational concept in leadership, teaching, and parenting.

This passage appears in Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's 1795 novel, Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship. Spoken during a conversation on character development, it reflects classic Enlightenment ideals concerning human potential and moral education.

This print suits a study, classroom, or office, where it serves as a thoughtful reminder for leaders and educators.
