“If a man can march in step to music with pleasure, I already despise him; he was given his large brain by mistake, since the spinal cord would fully suffice for him.”

Words by Albert Einstein (1879-1955) — Theoretical physicist.

About this quote

Einstein expresses his deep disdain for mindless conformity and militarism. He argues that blindly following orders or marching to a collective beat requires no intellect, reducing a person to basic bodily reflexes. True humanity relies on individual thought and independent reason rather than unthinking obedience to authority or state-sponsored nationalism.

This statement comes from Einstein's essay The World As I See It (Mein Weltbild), published in 1931. It reflects his lifelong pacifism and opposition to military display, written during a period of rising nationalism in Germany.

People often hang this print in a home study or classroom to encourage independent thinking and free inquiry.
