I write because I don't know what I think until I read… — Flannery O'Connor | Printable Wall Art

“I write because I don't know what I think until I read what I say.”

Words by Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964) — Southern Gothic novelist and short-story writer.

About this quote

This quotation captures the idea that writing is a process of discovery rather than merely recording pre-formed ideas. For many creative thinkers, the physical act of putting words onto paper is how they uncover their true thoughts. Language acts as a mirror for the mind, helping us clarify complex feelings and arguments that remain vague until they are written down and read back.

Flannery O'Connor was a celebrated American novelist and short-story writer. She expressed this famous observation during a lecture on writing, which was later compiled into her posthumous essay collection, Mystery and Manners, published in 1969.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to encourage thoughtful writing and personal reflection.
