I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to… — Frederick Douglass | Printable Wall Art

“I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong.”

Words by Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) — Abolitionist and statesman.

About this quote

This statement expresses a firm commitment to moral principle over factional loyalty. Douglass explains that he is willing to ally with anyone, regardless of their background or political affiliation, provided the cause is just. However, he refuses to compromise his ethics or cooperate with anyone to commit an injustice. It champions principled cooperation, integrity, and pragmatic moral courage.

Frederick Douglass delivered this line during an 1855 speech in Rochester, New York, regarding the anti-slavery movement. He was defending his choice to work with diverse political groups who shared the goal of ending slavery.

People often hang this print in a study or office as a daily reminder of moral integrity and coalition.
