I wonder, by my troth, what thou and I did, till we… — John Donne | Printable Wall Art

“I wonder, by my troth, what thou and I did, till we loved.”

Words by John Donne (1572-1631) — English metaphysical poet.

About this quote

The speaker reflects on the nature of life before meeting their lover, suggesting that previous experiences were trivial, like the slumber of children. True existence only began with their mutual affection. Donne conveys how a profound romantic relationship reshapes a person's entire perception of time and reality, rendering everything before it as merely a prelude to genuine living.

This is the opening line of John Donne's poem The Good-Morrow. Written in the late sixteenth or early seventeenth century, it was published posthumously in his 1633 collection, Songs and Sonnets.

People often hang this print in the bedroom to celebrate intimate devotion and the start of shared life.
