Words by Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837) — Russian poet, author of Eugene Onegin.

About this quote

Pushkin captures the profound effect of a fleeting encounter that leaves an enduring impression on the human soul. This famous opening line introduces a meditation on beauty, devotion, and memory. It speaks to how a brief moment of grace can sustain a person through long periods of hardship and solitude, eventually restoring joy, creativity, and love when remembered.

Written in 1825 while Pushkin was living in exile, this lyric was dedicated to Anna Kern. It was published in the almanac Northern Flowers in 1827 and became one of the most celebrated love poems in Russian literature.
