Je me révolte, donc nous sommes. — Albert Camus | Printable Wall Art

“Je me révolte, donc nous sommes.”
“I rebel, therefore we exist.”

Words by Albert Camus (1913-1960) — French-Algerian novelist, essayist, and Nobel Prize-winning philosopher.

About this quote

Camus reshapes Descartes’s famous logical phrase to focus on human solidarity. While Descartes asserted individual thought, Camus argues that standing up against injustice connects us to others. Rejection of oppression is not a purely selfish act; it recognises a shared human dignity. By rebelling against unfair conditions, an individual asserts that everyone deserves fair treatment, creating a sense of collective existence.

This line appears in Albert Camus’s 1951 book-length essay, The Rebel (L’Homme révolté). In this work, he examines the metaphysics and politics of human rebellion against tyranny and the absurdity of existence in the twentieth century.

People often hang this print in a study or home office to inspire quiet moral conviction and shared purpose.
