I really think a champion is defined not by their wins but… — Serena Williams | Printable Wall Art

“I really think a champion is defined not by their wins but by how they can recover when they fall.”

Words by Serena Williams (1981-) — Tennis champion, 23-time Grand Slam singles titleholder.

About this quote

True strength is revealed in moments of failure rather than victory. While trophy tallies and success attract attention, real greatness depends on resilience. Everyone encounters set-backs, but a true champion learns from defeat, picks themselves up, and keeps going. The line shifts the focus from easy triumphs to the quiet determination required to bounce back when things go wrong.

Serena Williams spoke these words during a post-match press conference in 2012, reflecting on her career and her approach to overcoming injuries and unexpected losses on the professional tennis circuit.
