I'll tell you what freedom is to me: no fear. — Nina Simone | Printable Wall Art

“I'll tell you what freedom is to me: no fear.”

Words by Nina Simone (1933-2003) — American singer and civil rights era pianist.

About this quote

Nina Simone defines freedom not as an abstract political concept, but as a felt emotional state: living entirely without fear. To her, true liberty is the absence of anxiety, intimidation, and hesitation. When fear is removed, a person can speak, create, and live authentically. The quote suggests that true independence begins within the mind when fear no longer dictates one's choices.

Nina Simone spoke these words during a filmed interview in 1968. Refusing to offer a complex philosophical definition, she gave a spontaneous, deeply personal response that reflected both her creative life and her civil rights activism.

People often hang this print in a home office or creative studio as a daily prompt for courage.
