“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it.”

Words by Nelson Mandela (1918-2013) — South African President and anti-apartheid leader.

About this quote

True bravery is not about feeling no dread or anxiety. Instead, it is the ability to act rightly despite feeling terrified. Everyone experiences fear, but courageous individuals master their emotion and press forward anyway. Mandela suggests that mastery over fear is a skill developed through experience, making bravery an intentional choice rather than a natural absence of emotion.

This line appears in Nelson Mandela's 1994 autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom. Reflecting on his decades of struggle against apartheid, he wrote about watching his comrades face danger and torture without breaking.

People often hang this quote in a home study or office to inspire resilience during difficult professional challenges.
