Die Botschaft hör ich wohl, allein mir fehlt der Glaube. — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe | Printable Wall Art

“Die Botschaft hör ich wohl, allein mir fehlt der Glaube.”
“I hear the message well, only I lack the faith.”

Words by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) — German poet, novelist, and statesman.

About this quote

This line captures the tension between intellectual understanding and genuine trust. The speaker comprehends a comforting promise or argument, yet remains unable to accept it inwardly. It speaks to a common human experience: hearing optimistic news, advice, or spiritual claims, but feeling too sceptical or weary to genuinely believe. It reflects a quiet, honest acknowledgment of doubt.

The line comes from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's verse drama Faust, Part One, published in 1808. The scholar Faust speaks these words upon hearing Easter church bells, remembering the comfort of childhood religion while recognising he can no longer share that belief.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to invite quiet reflection and thoughtful inquiry.
