武士道と云ふは死ぬ事と見附けたり — Yamamoto Tsunetomo | Printable Wall Art

“武士道と云ふは死ぬ事と見附けたり”
“I have found that the Way of the Samurai is death”

Words by Yamamoto Tsunetomo (1659-1719) — Samurai and author of the Hagakure, a foundational Bushido text.

About this quote

This statement is often misunderstood as an obsession with mortality. In practice, it advocates a mindset of total commitment and selflessness. By mentally accepting death in advance, a warrior frees themselves from fear, hesitation, and self-interest. It encourages living each moment with singular purpose, personal integrity, and an unshakeable devotion to duties and principles.

Dictated by the retired samurai Yamamoto Tsunetomo between 1709 and 1716, this statement opens the Hagakure. The work compiled classic warrior ethics during a peaceful era when the traditional samurai role was undergoing major change.

People often display this quote in a home study or training space to encourage focus, discipline, and resolve.
