I generally avoid temptation unless I can't resist it. — Mae West | Printable Wall Art

“I generally avoid temptation unless I can't resist it.”

Words by Mae West (1893-1980) — Actress and playwright known for her wit.

About this quote

This playful quip subverts the idea of self-control. On the surface, it claims a virtuous effort to stay away from bad habits or vices. However, the punchline immediately undoes that promise, admitting that willpower crumbles the moment genuine desire appears. It celebrates human weakness with sharp, cheeky self-awareness rather than any sense of shame or guilt.

The line is attributed to the American actress and playwright Mae West, renowned for her provocative wit. It reflects the bold, coy stage persona she developed during her long career in vaudeville, Broadway, and Hollywood cinema.

People often hang this print in a kitchen or home bar area as a humorous nod to indulgence.
