L'hypocrisie est un vice à la mode, et tous les vices à… — Molière | Printable Wall Art

“L'hypocrisie est un vice à la mode, et tous les vices à la mode passent pour vertus.”
“Hypocrisy is a fashionable vice, and all fashionable vices pass for virtues.”

Words by Molière (1622-1673) — French playwright and actor, master of classical comedy.

About this quote

This observation highlights how easily social trends can distort morality. When a dishonest behaviour becomes popular or fashionable, society stops condemning it and begins to accept it as normal or even admirable. Molière warns us to look past prevailing social attitudes, reminding us that a bad trait does not become good simply because everyone is practising it.

This line comes from Molière's 1665 satirical play Dom Juan. Spoken by the central character in the fifth act, it forms part of a famous monologue where Dom Juan calculates how adopting deceit will protect his reputation.

It suits a study or home office, offering a sharp daily reminder to value integrity over social trend.
