Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all… — Desmond Tutu | Printable Wall Art

“Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness.”

Words by Desmond Tutu (1931-2021) — South African archbishop and human rights activist.

About this quote

This line defines hope not as a denial of hardship, but as the quiet conviction that hardship is not absolute. True hope does not ignore darkness or pretend suffering does not exist. Instead, it chooses to search for and acknowledge the presence of light, encouraging resilience, patience, and courage through the most challenging moments of human experience.

Desmond Tutu, the South African Anglican archbishop and anti-apartheid leader, spoke and wrote frequently about hope during his lifelong struggle against racial oppression. This widely quoted reflection encapsulates his spiritual and political philosophy.

People often hang this print in a bedroom or quiet study to offer daily quiet comfort and encouragement.
