Hope is a continual looking forward to the eternal world. — C. S. Lewis | Printable Wall Art

“Hope is a continual looking forward to the eternal world.”

Words by C. S. Lewis (1898-1963) — British author of Mere Christianity.

About this quote

In this passage, C. S. Lewis redefines hope as a deliberate, ongoing focus on the afterlife rather than vague wishful thinking about earthly circumstances. He suggests that genuine Christian hope is not about expecting immediate comforts in this life, but about directing one's mind towards eternal truths, which in turn gives daily existence deeper purpose and patience.

The quotation appears in C. S. Lewis's 1952 book Mere Christianity, based on his famous BBC radio broadcasts given during the Second World War. Lewis included it in his discussion on the theological virtue of hope.

People often display this quote near a bedside or study desk to offer daily perspective and quiet encouragement.
