“Hope begins in the dark, the stubborn hope that if you just show up and try to do the right thing, the dawn will come.”

Words by Anne Lamott (1954-) — American author of Bird by Bird.

About this quote

This quotation suggests that real hope does not belong to easy, bright moments. Instead, it starts during difficult and uncertain times. True optimism requires a quiet persistence: continuing to do what is right, day after day, despite feeling unsure of the outcome. It reassures us that simple, steady effort eventually leads to light and clarity.

Written by American novelist and memoirist Anne Lamott, this sentence reflects her characteristic blend of faith, honesty, and pragmatism. It appears in her published essays exploring belief, anxiety, and daily resilience.

People often hang this print in a study or home office for daily encouragement during difficult tasks.
