Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged… — Langston Hughes | Printable Wall Art

“Hold fast to dreams, for if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird that cannot fly.”

Words by Langston Hughes (1901-1967) — Poet and leading voice of the Harlem Renaissance.

About this quote

This line urges us to protect our hopes and ambitions, no matter the obstacles. Hughes uses a simple, striking image to show that without dreams, human life loses its core purpose and joy. Much like a bird that cannot take flight, a person without aspirations becomes trapped, missing out on the freedom and potential that makes life meaningful.

Written by Langston Hughes, a central figure of the Harlem Renaissance, this opening couplet comes from his short 1922 poem titled Dreams. It remains one of his most popular and frequently quoted short works.

People often hang this print in a classroom, study, or child's bedroom to encourage daily hope and perseverance.
