Herz, mein Herz, was soll das geben? — Johann Wolfgang von Goethe | Printable Wall Art

“Herz, mein Herz, was soll das geben?”
“Heart, my heart, what is to become of this?”

Words by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) — German poet, novelist, and statesman.

About this quote

The speaker addresses their own restless heart, bewildered by the sudden onset of a new love. The line captures the unsettling feeling when deep emotion overrules reason, disturbing one's usual calm and independence. It expresses the universal inner conflict between wanting to remain in control and feeling helplessly drawn towards someone, wondering where these overwhelming feelings will ultimately lead.

Written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1775, this line opens his poem Neue Liebe, neues Leben ('New Love, New Life'). It reflects Goethe's turmoil during his brief engagement to Lili Schönemann in Frankfurt.

This print sits well beside a bed, offering a thoughtful, intimate reflection on love and emotion.
