He who learns but does not think, is lost. He who thinks… — Confucius | Printable Wall Art

“He who learns but does not think, is lost. He who thinks but does not learn is in great danger.”

Words by Confucius (551-479 BC) — Chinese philosopher and teacher.

About this quote

This saying highlights the essential balance between acquiring knowledge and reflection. Absorbing facts without thinking about them leaves a person confused and unable to apply what they know. Conversely, speculating without studying facts leads to misguided conclusions. True understanding requires both passive learning and active, critical thought working together.

The line appears in Book 2 of the Analects, a foundational Chinese text compiled by the disciples of Confucius after his death. It records his core views on education, self-cultivation, and practical philosophy.

People often display this in a home office or classroom to encourage thoughtful study and critical reasoning.
