About this quote

This traditional Spanish proverb suggests that associating with wise, virtuous, or influential people brings protection and benefit. Just as a sturdy tree offers shelter from heat or rain, surrounding oneself with reliable companions provides support and security. It encourages careful choices in relationships, reminding us that strong, dependable influences help us thrive and navigate life with greater ease.

This traditional proverb has circulated in Spanish literature for centuries, notably appearing in Miguel de Cervantes's Don Quixote in 1605. Its exact author is unknown, as the saying stems from the shared folk wisdom of Spain.

People often hang this in a hallway or study to remind family and guests of wise choices and support.
