About this quote

This traditional saying highlights the power of patronage, influence, and social connections. In plain terms, having a well-placed sponsor or mentor makes it far easier to achieve your goals. It reflects a pragmatic view of life, acknowledging that personal merit alone is often not enough without the practical support and favour of someone who holds authority or influence.

This is a traditional Spanish-language proverb recorded widely across Spain and Latin America. As a folk saying, its exact origins and date are unknown, but it has long been used to comment on social connections and favouritism.

People often hang this in a home office or study as a practical reminder of networking and mentorship.
