About this quote

This classic proverb serves as a warning against overreaching, pride, and hubris. It suggests that the higher someone ascends through excessive ambition or arrogance, the greater and more painful their eventual collapse will be. The underlying principle encourages humility, self-awareness, and staying grounded, reminding us that dramatic success often carries the risk of a steep descent if unmanaged.

This traditional Croatian saying reflects a folk wisdom common to many European cultures. While its exact origins are unrecorded, the expression has circulated across the Balkans for generations as a popular spoken caution against arrogance.

People often hang this in a home office or study as a daily reminder to remain humble despite success.
