Wer anderen eine Grube gräbt, fällt selbst hinein — German Proverb | Printable Wall Art

“Wer anderen eine Grube gräbt, fällt selbst hinein”
“He who digs a pit for others falls into it himself.”

A traditional German saying, set as gallery-quality typographic wall art.

About this quote

This classic proverb warns that malicious actions against others often backfire on the instigator. Setting a trap or scheming to cause harm usually leads to one's own undoing. The underlying idea is a call for moral integrity, reminding us that dishonesty and malice carry inherent risks, ultimately returning to punish those who orchestrate them.

While widely known as a traditional German proverb, the imagery originates in biblical texts, such as Proverbs and Ecclesiastes. Martin Luther's German Bible translation firmly established the exact wording in popular German culture and phrasing.

People often hang this print in a home office or study as a practical daily reminder of ethical conduct.
