He that dares not grasp the thorn should never crave the rose. — Anne Brontë | Printable Wall Art

“He that dares not grasp the thorn should never crave the rose.”

Words by Anne Brontë (1820-1849) — English novelist and poet.

About this quote

This line suggests that beauty, love, and worthwhile achievements rarely come without hardship or risk. To enjoy the reward, represented by the rose, one must be willing to endure the painful or challenging parts, symbolized by the thorns. It encourages courage, reminding us that avoiding all discomfort means missing out on life's finest experiences.

This line comes from Anne Brontë's poem The Narrow Way, published in 1848. Writing during the Victorian era, Brontë frequently addressed themes of moral courage, duty, and the quiet resilience needed to endure life's challenges.

People often hang this print in a study or bedroom as a daily reminder to embrace life's challenges.
