Have regular hours for work and play; make each day both useful… — Louisa May Alcott | Printable Wall Art

“Have regular hours for work and play; make each day both useful and pleasant.”

Words by Louisa May Alcott (1832-1888) — American novelist, author of Little Women.

About this quote

This quote advocates for a balanced, structured life where labour and rest coexist harmoniously. Alcott suggests that true satisfaction comes from combining productivity with enjoyment rather than favouring one over the other. By setting deliberate routine boundaries, one can ensure that daily responsibilities are fulfilled while still making time for leisure, personal joy, and well-earned relaxation.

This line appears in Louisa May Alcott’s classic 1868 novel, Little Women. It is spoken by Mrs March to her daughters as gentle advice on finding harmony between daily duties and recreation.

People often hang this print in a home office or study to encourage balanced habits throughout the workday.
