和敬清寂 — Sen no Rikyū | Printable Wall Art

“和敬清寂”
“Harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility”

Words by Sen no Rikyū (1522-1591) — Tea master who codified the principles of the Japanese tea ceremony.

About this quote

These four principles define the spirit of the Japanese tea ceremony. Harmony refers to balance with nature and other people. Respect requires recognising the dignity of every guest and object. Purity involves cleansing both the physical space and the mind. Tranquility is the inner peace achieved when the first three principles are fully practised together in daily life.

Formulated by the sixteenth-century Japanese tea master Sen no Rikyū, this four-character phrase codified the core philosophical principles of the tea ceremony, guiding conduct, aesthetic simplicity, and spiritual mindfulness.

People often hang this print in a hallway or living space to foster quiet reflection and mutual respect.
