Gost i riba nakon tri dana smrde. — Croatian Proverb | Printable Wall Art

“Gost i riba nakon tri dana smrde.”
“Guests, like fish, start to smell after three days.”

A traditional Croatian saying, set as gallery-quality typographic wall art.

About this quote

This saying offers a humorous reminder about the limits of hospitality. While welcoming visitors is a generous act, staying too long strains the patience and resources of any host. The blunt comparison to spoiling fish highlights how quickly a pleasant visit turns uncomfortable if a guest overstays, suggesting that short visits keep friendships intact.

This traditional Croatian proverb belongs to a shared European oral history. Variations of the expression have circulated across the Balkan region for centuries, famously appearing in similar forms in Plautus, John Lyly, and Benjamin Franklin's writings.

People often hang this in a guest bedroom or hallway to give visitors a lighthearted, humorous welcome.
