Grief is the price we pay for love. — Queen Elizabeth II | Printable Wall Art

“Grief is the price we pay for love.”

Words by Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) — Monarch of the United Kingdom for over 70 years.

About this quote

This line reminds us that deep sorrow after a loss is a natural extension of profound affection. We cannot open our hearts to love others without accepting the vulnerability of losing them. Rather than seeing sorrow as a purely negative force, the quote frames it as a quiet testament to the genuine strength and beauty of the connection shared.

Queen Elizabeth II included this phrase in a message read by the British ambassador at a memorial service in New York following the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001. Psychiatrist Dr Colin Murray Parkes had previously expressed a similar thought in 1972.

People often hang this print in a quiet bedroom or study as a gentle reminder of lasting affection.
