“Freundschaft, in ihrer Vollkommenheit betrachtet, ist die Vereinigung zweier Personen durch gleiche wechselseitige Liebe und Achtung.”
“Friendship, considered in its perfection, is the union of two people through equal mutual love and respect.”

Words by Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) — German philosopher.

About this quote

Kant suggests that true friendship requires a delicate balance of two equal forces: affectionate warmth and respectful distance. Love draws people together, while respect ensures they maintain each other's dignity. When both qualities are offered equally and returned in full, friendship reaches its highest moral ideal, becoming a harmonious partnership between two minds based on complete fairness and mutual trust.

This passage appears in Immanuel Kant's 1797 work, The Metaphysics of Morals. In his ethical writings, the Enlightenment philosopher treated perfect friendship as a noble ideal, combining affection with moral duties of dignity and mutual esteem.

People often hang this print in a hallway or living room to celebrate enduring bonds of loyalty and warmth.
