Fortes Fortuna Adiuvat — Terence | Printable Wall Art

“Fortes Fortuna Adiuvat”
“Fortune favors the brave”

Words by Terence (195-159 BC) — Roman playwright.

About this quote

This proverb suggests that chance benefits those who act with courage rather than those who hesitate. It implies that success requires bold initiative, and that circumstances often align in favour of people willing to take risks. Rather than waiting for ideal conditions, one should step forward, as brave actions create their own opportunities.

The phrase appears in Terence’s comedy Phormio, produced in 161 BC. Though Terence recorded it early, the line was already a popular proverb in ancient Rome and was later adapted by many classical writers.

People often hang this print in a study or home office as a daily reminder to tackle difficult decisions boldly.
