“For us believing physicists, the separation between past, present, and future is only an illusion, however persistent.”

Words by Albert Einstein (1879-1955) — Theoretical physicist.

About this quote

Einstein suggests that our experience of time passing is a human perspective rather than an absolute truth of the universe. In modern physics, space and time are bound together, making past, present, and future equally real. What feels like a steady flow from yesterday to tomorrow is an observer's perspective, a stubborn illusion shaped by our limited senses.

Einstein wrote these lines in March 1955 in a condolence letter to the family of Michele Besso, his lifelong friend and fellow engineer. Einstein himself passed away less than a month later.

People often hang this print in a study or library to prompt quiet contemplation on science and memory.
