Denn das Schöne ist nichts als des Schrecklichen Anfang, den wir noch… — Rainer Maria Rilke | Printable Wall Art

“Denn das Schöne ist nichts als des Schrecklichen Anfang, den wir noch grade ertragen.”
“For beauty is nothing but the beginning of terror, which we are still just able to bear.”

Words by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) — Austrian-German poet.

About this quote

Beauty is rarely just pleasant or soothing; it touches on something overwhelming and sublime. Rilke suggests that true aesthetic experience destabilises us because it reveals forces far greater than ourselves. What we perceive as beautiful is simply an intensity of reality that we can barely withstand before it turns into awe, dread, and loss of control.

This line opens the First Elegy in Rilke's celebrated Duino Elegies, written between 1912 and 1922. The collection explores themes of existential solitude, human limitation, and the overwhelming nature of the sublime.

People often display this quote in a private study or reading corner to encourage quiet, contemplative thought.
