“Few are capable of calmly expressing opinions that differ from the prejudices of their surroundings; most are even incapable of forming such opinions at all.”

Words by Albert Einstein (1879-1955) — Theoretical physicist.

About this quote

This observation highlights the rarity of independent thought. Einstein suggests that social environments condition our beliefs, making it difficult for people to question prevailing assumptions. Forming an original perspective requires intellectual effort, while voicing it calmly demands courage. Most people simply absorb the biases of their culture without realising it, making true original thinkers a genuine rarity in any society.

This line comes from Einstein's written reflections on human nature and freedom of thought, later collected in mid-twentieth-century anthologies of his essays. It reflects his lifelong interest in philosophy, social responsibility, and individual freedom.

People often hang this quote in a home study or library as a quiet reminder to think independently.
