“Everything was in confusion in the Oblonskys' house”

Words by Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) — Author of War and Peace and Anna Karenina.

About this quote

This line describes a state of total domestic chaos, where normal routines have broken down completely. Beyond its literal meaning in the novel, the phrase became a popular idiom for any situation where order has given way to confusion, disorganisation, or sudden upheaval in daily life. It reminds us that even the most stable households occasionally experience periods of complete disarray.

It opens the second chapter of Leo Tolstoy's 1878 novel Anna Karenina. It introduces the immediate domestic crisis facing the Oblonsky family after Stiva's affair is discovered, establishing the novel's central themes of marital discord.

People often hang this in a busy family kitchen or hallway as a humorous nod to daily household chaos.
