Everyone sees what you appear to be, few experience what you really… — Niccolò Machiavelli | Printable Wall Art

“Everyone sees what you appear to be, few experience what you really are.”

Words by Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527) — Italian political philosopher, author of The Prince.

About this quote

People judge you by what you present on the surface, as few ever get close enough to know your true character. Machiavelli highlights the distinction between public reputation and private identity, suggesting that image is easily projected to the masses, whereas true nature remains hidden to all but an intimate few who experience it directly.

This line originates from Niccolò Machiavelli’s famous political treatise, The Prince, written in 1513. In it, he discusses political strategy, reputation, and how rulers must manage public perceptions to maintain power.

People often hang this print in a home office or hallway as a subtle reminder of personal integrity.
