“Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

Words by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) — Painter and sculptor, co-founder of Cubism.

About this quote

Children naturally create without fear, self-doubt, or strict rules. As people age, societal pressure and practical routines often suppress this instinct. Picasso suggests that true creativity lies in preserving that early curiosity and willingness to experiment. Being an artist as an adult requires consciously keeping hold of the playfulness, open-mindedness, and uninhibited freedom that came naturally during childhood.

Picasso expressed this idea to writer Christian Zervos in 1935, discussing how children create without preconceptions. The modern English phrasing gained widespread recognition after appearing in Time magazine in 1976, shortly after the artist's death.

People often hang this print in a creative studio, playroom, or classroom to encourage daily imagination and play.
