Every artist was first an amateur. — Ralph Waldo Emerson | Printable Wall Art

“Every artist was first an amateur.”

Words by Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) — Essayist and philosopher.

About this quote

Great skill is built through practice rather than granted at birth. Everyone begins with modest ability and makes mistakes before mastering a craft. This line reminds us that early struggles are a natural part of learning. Perfection takes time, and even the most celebrated creators were once beginners building their confidence through patient effort.

The line comes from Ralph Waldo Emerson's 1875 essay collection, Letters and Social Aims, specifically within the essay Eloquence. It reflects the nineteenth-century American Transcendentalist belief in self-improvement, personal growth, and practical devotion to one's craft.

People often hang this print in a studio, study, or classroom to encourage patience during creative work.
