Ein jeder Engel ist schrecklich. — Rainer Maria Rilke | Printable Wall Art

“Ein jeder Engel ist schrecklich.”
“Every angel is terrifying.”

Words by Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926) — Austrian-German poet.

About this quote

Rilke suggests that true beauty and divine perfection are so intense that they overwhelm human consciousness. An angel represents absolute purity and transcendent reality, which mortal beings cannot endure without feeling undone. Rather than comforting us, supreme beauty challenges our fragile existence, reminding us that the sublime is both awe-inspiring and deeply terrifying to the human soul.

This famous line opens the first of the Duino Elegies, written by Rilke at Duino Castle in 1912 and published in 1923. It established the central theme of his masterwork on human existence and divinity.

People often hang this print in a quiet study or library to inspire deep literary and philosophical reflection.
