Le doute n'est pas une condition agréable, mais la certitude est absurde. — Voltaire | Printable Wall Art

“Le doute n'est pas une condition agréable, mais la certitude est absurde.”
“Doubt is not a pleasant condition, but certainty is absurd.”

Words by Voltaire (1694-1778) — French Enlightenment writer, philosopher, and satirist.

About this quote

Living with uncertainty feels uncomfortable and unstable, yet claiming absolute certainty about complex truths is foolish. Voltaire suggests that healthy scepticism keeps minds open and flexible. True wisdom lies in accepting that human understanding is limited, making reasoned doubt a necessary part of honest thought and intellectual maturity.

This line comes from a letter Voltaire wrote to Frederick the Great in April 1767. Written during the European Enlightenment, it reflects his lifelong opposition to dogmatism, religious fanaticism, and unexamined intellectual arrogance.

People often hang this print in a home study or office to encourage open-minded thought during daily work.
