A caval donato non si guarda in bocca. — Italian Proverb | Printable Wall Art

“A caval donato non si guarda in bocca.”
“Don't look a gift horse in the mouth.”

A traditional Italian saying, set as gallery-quality typographic wall art.

About this quote

When you receive a gift, accept it with gratitude rather than searching for flaws. The image comes from assessing a horse's age and health by examining its teeth. Criticising a gift suggests ingratitude towards the giver. The underlying message encourages appreciation and good manners, reminding us that goodwill matters far more than the exact value of what we receive.

This traditional proverb has roots in antiquity, appearing in Latin writings by Saint Jerome in the fourth century. It quickly became a universal piece of folk wisdom, shared across many European languages.

People often hang this in a dining room or kitchen as a lighthearted reminder of hospitality and appreciation.
