“Willst du immer weiter schweifen? Sieh, das Gute liegt so nah. Lerne nur das Glück ergreifen, denn das Glück ist immer da.”
“Do you always want to wander further? See, the good lies so near. Just learn to seize happiness, for happiness is always there.”

Words by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) — German poet, novelist, and statesman.

About this quote

This verse encourages us to stop searching endlessly in distant places for contentment. Goethe suggests that true happiness and value are usually right in front of us, rather than somewhere far away. Instead of constantly seeking something better on the horizon, we ought to recognise the everyday good surrounding us and actively choose to embrace the simple joys that already exist in our lives.

Written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, these lines form the opening quatrain of his 1789 poem Erinnerung, which translates as Remembrance. It remains one of his most famous short verses on mindfulness and contentment.

People often hang this print in an entryway as a daily reminder to appreciate what is close at hand.
