己所不欲，勿施於人 — Confucius | Printable Wall Art

“己所不欲，勿施於人”
“Do not impose on others what you yourself do not desire.”

Words by Confucius (551 BC-479 BC) — Ancient Chinese philosopher, founder of Confucianism.

About this quote

This principle, often called the Silver Rule, forms the core of ethical behaviour. It encourages thoughtful self-reflection before acting. By considering how a choice might feel if received rather than given, one avoids inflicting harm, unfairness, or discomfort. It prioritises empathy, urging people to treat others with the same respect and consideration they naturally desire for themselves.

Recorded in the Analects, a collection of teachings compiled by his followers, this statement represents a foundational idea of Confucian philosophy. It dates to ancient China during the Spring and Autumn period, forming a guide for social harmony.

People often hang this in a hallway or study as a daily reminder to practise empathy and fair treatment.
