“Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.”

Words by Dylan Thomas (1914-1953) — Welsh poet.

About this quote

This famous refrain urges people to resist death and fight fiercely for life until the very end. The poem encourages an attitude of defiance against the inevitable decline of old age. Rather than accepting death passively or going quietly, Thomas calls on us to embrace passion, courage, and vitality, burning brightly even as the final darkness approaches.

Written by Welsh poet Dylan Thomas in 1947, this poem was published in 1951. Structured as a villanelle, Thomas composed the passionate piece for his gravely ill father, David John Thomas, who was losing his sight and strength.

People often hang this print in a home study or library for daily motivation during challenging creative or personal struggles.
