Creativity takes courage. — Henri Matisse | Printable Wall Art

“Creativity takes courage.”

Words by Henri Matisse (1869-1954) — Painter and sculptor, leading figure of Fauvism.

About this quote

Making something original requires braving self-doubt, criticism, and the fear of failure. To create truly fresh work, an artist must abandon comfortable rules and step into the unknown. Matisse suggests that artistic expression is not merely a pleasant pastime or innate talent, but a conscious act of bravery that demands psychological strength and willingness to risk vulnerability.

This observation comes from the French modernist painter and sculptor Henri Matisse. It reflects his lifelong commitment to artistic experimentation, particularly his bold departure from traditional form and colour during the Fauvist movement and his later paper cut-outs.

People often display this print in design studios, home offices, or creative workshops to inspire bold thinking and perseverance.
