Couvrez ce sein que je ne saurais voir. — Molière | Printable Wall Art

“Couvrez ce sein que je ne saurais voir.”
“Cover that bosom, which I must not see.”

Words by Molière (1622-1673) — French playwright and actor, master of classical comedy.

About this quote

Spoken by the hypocrite Tartuffe, this line mocks false modesty and religious hypocrisy. By demanding a woman cover herself to protect his pious mind from temptation, he reveals his own preoccupation with the very desire he pretends to renounce. It remains a famous rebuke to performative virtue, self-righteousness, and the tendency to blame others for one's own inappropriate thoughts.

The line comes from Molière's 1664 theatrical comedy Tartuffe. The titular character utters it to the sensible maid Dorine while handing her a handkerchief, attempting to project a saintly disgust at her modest attire.

People often hang this print in a dressing room or bedroom, bringing a humorous, literary touch to personal spaces.
