Consider your origin: you were not made to live like brutes, but… — Dante Alighieri | Printable Wall Art

“Consider your origin: you were not made to live like brutes, but to follow virtue and knowledge.”

Words by Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) — Italian poet, author of The Divine Comedy.

About this quote

This line reminds us that human beings are defined by their capacity for reason and moral choice. Living merely for basic instincts or physical survival wastes our inherent potential. Instead, we are urged to spend our lives seeking truth, understanding, and ethical growth. It is a timeless call to choose purpose and curiosity over passive existence.

This passage comes from Canto XXVI of Dante Alighieri's Inferno, composed in the early fourteenth century. In the poem, Ulysses speaks these famous words to urge his aging crew to sail beyond the known boundaries of the world in pursuit of discovery.

People often display this print in a study or home library as a daily reminder to pursue lifelong learning.
