About this quote

This proverb suggests that taking proper care of oneself and one's immediate household is the essential foundation for helping others effectively. Rather than advocating selfishness, it emphasises that personal stability and self-regard provide the necessary resources, strength, and moral clarity required to extend genuine kindness, generosity, and support to the wider community.

This is a traditional French folk saying with roots in classical Latin texts and medieval Christian proverbs. It has circulated widely across Europe since the sixteenth century as a practical guide to personal duty.

People often place this in a home office or bedroom as a daily reminder to practise self-care.
