Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe… — Jane Howard | Printable Wall Art

“Call it a clan, call it a network, call it a tribe, call it a family. Whatever you call it, whoever you are, you need one.”

Words by Jane Howard (1935-1996) — American journalist and author of Families.

About this quote

This quotation emphasises the universal human need for belonging and support. It suggests that the specific label given to a group matters far less than the emotional bond and security it provides. Whether bound by blood, shared values, or mutual care, everyone requires a close community to help them navigate life and offer a sense of identity.

Written by American journalist and author Jane Howard, this passage appears in her 1978 book Families. The work explores how traditional and modern support systems function in contemporary society.

Homeowners often hang this print in a hallway or living room to welcome family and friends into a shared space.
