About this quote

This traditional expression calls for plain, honest speaking without embellishment or evasion. It encourages calling things by their true names, being direct, and facing reality directly. Much like the English phrase to call a spade a spade, it celebrates clarity, simplicity, and truthfulness in everyday communication, suggesting that simple facts require no poetic disguise or unnecessary complication.

This traditional Spanish proverb has been in popular oral use across the Spanish-speaking world for centuries. Its exact historical origin and original speaker remain unknown, though it reflects the enduring value placed on straight talking in folk wisdom.

People often hang this print in the kitchen or dining area to celebrate plain speech and warm hospitality.
